The simple guide to creating videos for your business using just your phone
Creating videos for your business doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. In fact, you probably already own the most important piece of equipment you need... your phone.
I hear the same things all the time.
"I don't know what to film."
"I don't want to be on camera."
"I don't have expensive equipment."
"I don't know how to edit."
"I don't have time."
If any of those sound familiar, this blog is for you.
Here's my simple guide to creating better videos for your business using just your phone.
Why video still matters
Video helps people get a feel for your business before they have even spoken to you.
And yes, I know everyone says “people buy from people” — but they do. Video gives your audience something they can connect with: your process, your product, your space, your team, your values, or the small details that make your business feel real.
That doesn’t mean you have to be on camera talking every time. We’ll get to that shortly.
For now, remember this: real, authentic footage helps build trust. Short-form video continues to be one of the strongest ways to capture attention across platforms like Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn. You only have a few seconds to stop someone scrolling, so make them count.
Before you press record
Before you even think about filming, ask yourself four simple questions.
What is the purpose of this video?
Who am I creating it for?
Which platform am I sharing it on?
What do I want someone to do after watching?
If you can't answer those questions, don't press record yet.
Having a clear purpose will make filming, editing and writing your caption much easier.
1. Tell one simple story
One of the biggest mistakes I see is trying to squeeze everything into one video.
Don't.
Pick one message.
Perhaps you're introducing a new service, answering a frequently asked question, showing how a product works or giving people a glimpse behind the scenes.
One message is far more memorable than five.
2. Your phone is good enough
You don't need a professional camera to get started.
A modern smartphone is more than capable of creating great content.
As I filmed more, I invested in a gimbal to make my footage smoother. They start from around £180, but don't feel you need one straight away. If video becomes a bigger part of your marketing, it's a worthwhile investment. Alternatively, work with a freelancer who already has the equipment and experience.
A few quick tips:
Clean your camera lens before filming.
Film vertically for most social media platforms.
Use natural light where possible.
Keep your phone steady or prop it against something solid.
If your phone allows it, film in 4K for the best quality, although HD is absolutely fine if storage is limited.
3. Capture more than you think you'll need
This is where B-roll comes in.
B-roll is simply the extra footage that helps tell your story.
It could be:
your hands working
products being packaged
customers arriving
equipment being used
setting up for the day
walking through your premises
close-up details
smiles, reactions or the little moments people don't normally see
These clips make editing much easier and help your videos feel more engaging, without you needing to talk to camera all the time.
4. You don't have to be on camera
One of the biggest myths about video marketing is that you have to stand in front of the camera talking.
You really don't.
A builder might film a project taking shape.
A hairdresser could capture a colour transformation.
A sports massage therapist might show stretches or treatment techniques.
A florist could film bouquets being made.
A counsellor could use calming footage of their space with text overlays explaining how they help.
Let your work tell the story.
5. Keep editing simple
Editing often sounds more intimidating than it really is.
I recommend CapCut because it's easy to learn and offers plenty of features in the free version.
You can:
trim clips
arrange footage on a simple timeline
add music
include photos
add text overlays
use transitions such as fades, zooms and other effects
adjust colours and speed
The free version will do more than enough for most businesses. If you start creating lots of videos, you may find CapCut Pro worthwhile for automatic captions, extra music and additional effects.
Don't forget captions
Many people watch videos without the sound on.
Adding captions or short pieces of text helps keep people engaged, improves accessibility and reinforces your message.
6. Let AI save you time, not replace you
AI can be brilliant for speeding up your workflow.
Use it to:
generate captions
trim longer clips
remove pauses
organise footage
help brainstorm ideas
Where I'd be more cautious is using AI to create your actual video.
People connect with people.
Authenticity matters, especially for small businesses.
Real footage of your team, your products, your workspace and your customers will almost always feel more genuine than AI-generated clips.
7. Finish with a clear next step
Every video should have a purpose.
Once someone has watched it, what do you want them to do?
Visit your website?
Book an appointment?
Read your latest blog?
Comment with a question?
Follow your page?
Without a clear next step, you're leaving the conversation unfinished.
What happens after you post?
Your job isn't finished once the video goes live.
Take a little time to review how it performed.
Which videos were watched the longest?
Which ones were shared or saved?
Did a particular topic perform better than another?
Was it the format or the message that connected?
Use that information to shape your next video.
Then do more of what works.
Planning and reviewing your content go hand in hand.
This is where I can help
Storytelling has always been my favourite part of marketing. It started with my Broadcast Journalism degree and, nearly twenty years later, it's still what I enjoy most.
Today, I help businesses tell their story through authentic, engaging video that feels natural, builds trust and showcases what makes them different.
Whether you need someone to storyboard an idea, film and edit a finished piece, or simply give you the confidence to get started, I'd love to help.
